Proposed Budget Cuts
Threaten Your Local Library

It is budget time in Raleigh and the Governor's proposed budget calls for a cut in public library funding (by nearly 5%)!!

We need your support. We're asking library patrons to email a petition to the Governor and elected officials in support of library funding. You may also stop by your library and sign a petition there.

Please visit your local library's "home page" and learn more about how you can help: Bryson City - Cashiers - Franklin - Highlands - Nantahala - Sylva

Libraries are the heart of their communities, providing residents of all ages with resources they need for jobs, education, and improved quality of life. Money spent on public libraries has a ripple effect in a community, effectively funding job creation and training, early childhood programs, elementary, secondary, and even higher education. Legislators and librarians know that libraries are not free, but they ARE worth every penny spent on them.

Did you know that state aid to public libraries has been cut from $2.24 per capita in 1998-1999 to $1.40 per capita in 2011-2012?

The Fontana Regional Library system includes Macon, Jackson and Swain counties. In one year alone these three counties had …

• Over 460,000 visitors

• 60,000 people attending events

• 420,000 books & movies borrowed

• 55,000 library card holders

• 137,000 computer sessions

Please support your local library by making your voice heard with local and state elected officials.
