AARP Tax Prep

Volunteers will be available to assist people of all ages with federal and state income tax preparation and filing from February 7th until April 11th This service will be available every Friday and Monday at the Jackson County Senior Center in Sylva and every Tuesday at the Jackson County Public Library, also in Sylva, unless those facilities are closed for holidays or snow.  Senior Center hours are from 10:00 to 3:00 All persons are helped on a first-come, first-served basis at the Senior Center.  Library hours on Tuesdays will be from 3:00 to 6:45 by appointment, with appointments available through the Library’s Reference Desk at (828)586-2016 There is no charge for this service at either location.
Taxpayers are requested to bring picture identification, their own and their dependents’ social security cards or a statement from the government that includes their social security numbers, copies of their 2015 tax return, and any W-2s, 1099s, 1098s, interest and dividend statements for 2016 and other documents necessary to complete their returns.
Anyone who has received health care insurance from the Marketplace will need to reconcile their Marketplace application with their actual income for the year through the filing process.   Exemptions may have been provided by the health insurance Marketplace or can be applied for on the 2016 tax return.  Individuals who obtained health insurance or an exemption through the Marketplace need to bring a copy of their 1095-A, the Health Insurance Marketplace Statement, and/or the letter from the Marketplace granting them the exemption.  You should receive Form 1095-A from the Marketplace by early February.  All others need to bring information about their health insurance coverage throughout 2016, including any 1095-B and/or 1095-C they have received.  If you did not have health insurance for the entire year, bring information on any monthly coverage you might have had.  The volunteers will help identify any exemptions you may qualify for if you did not have health insurance last year.
The program is sponsored by the Jackson County Senior Center, Jackson County Public Library, AARP Foundation, and the Internal Revenue Service.  All volunteers are trained and certified.  For other tax preparation sites in other counties and nationwide go to the website for locations and times of operation.
