Art Reception for Sharon Volker
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sharon Ann Volker is a self-taught artist. She began working with pastels in the early 1990’s, experimenting first with the human form and then with a
variety of still life and landscape subjects. She had always been interested in oils and after numerous visits to various museums and galleries, attempted her first oil on canvas in early 2000. It was
a reproduction of a “typical” Mediterranean village scene by an artist know as Vincent. Sharon discovered the painting in an art magazine and was intrigued by the artist’s use of color, light, and shadow.
Inspired by the positive comments of family and friends, she went on to reproduce other works by Croation artists Rajic Drago and Frane Mlinar, and also by American born artist John Zaccheo. She was specially attracted to their striking, hyper-realistic scenes of the Adriatic Coast. Each work has been a learning experience…mixing oils and acrylics to produce just the right color, blending and feathering the scenes on canvas, and reproducing as closely as possible the images she sees. Typically, each piece took three to four months to complete, depending on the complexity of the painting and her work schedule at the time. After retiring in 2000, Sharon began to paint in earnest, adding reproductions of works by two of her favorite American artists Howard Behrens and David Schluss. Their colors, styles, and subject matter offered a wide variety of opportunities to hone her skills. A variety of other works which inspired her followed. More recently, Sharon has added eight original pieces to her portfolio. Her
work has been profiled in the Asheville Citizen-Times and the Macon County News and she has won gold and silver medals in a variety of competitions, including 2nd in the state of NC in 2007 at Senior Games, Silver Arts division. She has had additional showings in Broward County Florida, has sold numerous paintings and has been commissioned to create other works. Sharon Ann Volker is a full-time resident of Otto, NC and can create detailed reproductions and original works of art.
