Presentation: Southern Appalachian Plant Society Program- Women in Botany by Jean Woods

Women have played a significant role in Botany and Horticulture in America from the colonial period through the 20th Century, but their contributions are not well known. This talk will discuss several of these intrepid women, their lives, their contributions, and their legacies. Learn about Alice Eastwood, Jane Colden, Frances Parsons, and Mary Henry. We will take a look at the tools that early botanists used for their field work as we celebrate their lives and accomplishments.

Jean Woods is President of the North Carolina Native Plant Society. She has served on the board of the Catawba Lands Conservancy and the Friends of Plant Conservation. Jean is a graduate of the Certificate in Native Plant Studies program at UNCC, and was involved in its establishment.
