Your checked out books and materials will now be automatically renewed in most cases. Some items are ineligible for renewal and cannot be auto-renewed, including some categories of materials and items that are on hold for other patrons. Your library account must be active and in good standing for your checked out items to auto-renew.

How does automatic renewal work?

Materials that can be renewed will be automatically renewed on the due date if no other patrons are waiting for a hold on that item.

If you have opted-in to email notices for your account, you will receive an email notifying you that an auto-renewal has succeeded or failed.

Text notifications for auto-renewal are not available at this time. If you have opted-out of email notices, you will not be notified whether your automatic renewals worked or not.

If you have any questions, please call your local library and we will be happy to assist you.

How do I check or change my email notification settings?

To configure your notification settings, login to your online library account and visit the Notification Preferences section under your Account Preferences: https://fontanalib.nccardinal.org/eg/opac/myopac/prefs_notify

If you want to add or change your email address, login to your online library account and visit the Personal Information section under your Account Preferences: https://fontanalib.nccardinal.org/eg/opac/myopac/prefs

If you have any questions or issues configuring your account settings, please call your local library and we will be happy to assist you.

Why didn't my items auto-renew?

Ineligible items (listed below) will not be automatically renewed. Your library card status may also block auto-renewals from occurring, such as your library card has expired or your balance due is over the limit. Please pay attention to the email notices to know when an auto-renewal fails.

An item won't auto-renew if one of the following is true:

  • The item is required for a hold for another patron.
  • Your library account has expired.
  • Fines have reached the maximum allowed.
  • The maximum renewals for an item have been reached.
Ineligible items

Items that are placed on hold for another patron are not eligible for automatic renewal.

Friends Rental Books, seasonal books, and digital resources are not eligible to be renewed and will not be automatically renewed.

Items that have already reached their renewal limit are also not eligible for renewal and will not be automatically renewed.
