The Fontana Regional Library is a public library system serving Jackson, Macon, and Swain Counties.  A staff of 71 provide educational, informational recreational services at six member libraries in the three county region.  Fontana is located the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina and is home to numerous outdoor activities including whitewater sports, mountain biking, and hiking.  The area has a wide variety of cultural, arts, and historical attractions and events. This location is an hour from Asheville and is home to Southwestern Community College and Western Carolina University. 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Fontana is seeking a full-time qualified professional to serve as part of the Library’s management team. The purpose of this job is to manage the accounting, financial reporting, and financial data analysis for Fontana Regional Library.  This position works under administrative supervision, developing and implementing programs within organizational policies and reports major activities to the Director of Fontana Regional Library and Board of Trustees of Fontana Regional Library.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  • Manages the accounting, financial reporting, and data analyses for the Library’s finances.
  • Plans, organizes, and manages all aspects of the Library’s financial operations.
  • Executes financial analyses, financial reporting, and the annual financial and compliance audits.
  • Monitors, reviews, updates and develops accounting processes and procedures using best practices ensuring sound internal controls.
  • Provide guidance and training to accounting and library staff as required.
  • Works closely with external auditors in preparation and completion of the annual financial audit and compliance audit.
  • Performs monthly operating account reconciliation.
  • Develops and manages regional library budget. 
  • Attends Regional Library Board of Trustees meetings, reports on financial operations, recommends policies and budget amendments, and serves as fiscal officer to the Board.
  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates any assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules of any assigned staff; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:  Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration or related field with two (2) years of experience in accounting; or possession of any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience in governmental accounting, Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Government Financial Manager (CFGM), or Certified Public Finance Officer (CPFO).

SALARY RANGE is $50,000-$55,000 plus a generous benefits package.  Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, paid vacation and sick leave, paid holidays, local government retirement plan, 401(k) program, and employee assistance program.

Branch Librarian

Hudson Library

The Hudson Library is seeking an energetic and collaborative candidate to fill the position of its Branch Librarian. Hudson Library is a member of Fontana Regional Library and a branch of the Macon County Public Library. The ideal candidate should be creative, flexible, and enthusiastic.

Qualifications: Masters’ degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution with a minimum of two years’ experience working in libraries. One year supervisory experience and two years’ customer service experience are required. Candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work with a variety of electronic and media applications. Salary range is $42,000 - $45,000 annually accompanied by a generous benefits package.

Responsibilities: supervise and direct branch library staff, oversee daily branch operations, work to assure effective communication within the community, with the county librarian, and in the regional library system to achieve local and system-wide goals. The branch librarian develops and maintains the branch collection to ensure the library meets the needs of the community it serves; participates in public service activities including circulation and reference services; plans and organizes library programs and activities for all ages; assesses user activities, programs, services, and goals; and works closely with Hudson Library Board for the growth and development of the library. Library Assistant 1

Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library

Albert Carlton – Cashiers Community Library, a branch of Fontana Regional Library, is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic candidate to fill the part-time position of Library Assistant I. The ideal candidate for the Library Assistant I will be a team player who can provide library services to meet the needs of the public. If you thrive in a rapidly changing environment while maintaining a friendly and helpful attitude, this may be the job for you.

Qualifications required for the Library Assistant I include a High School Diploma or GED. One year of customer service experience is required. One year of library experience is recommended. The successful candidate should have a commitment to quality customer service with excellent communication skills. Strong technology skills and the ability to give attention to detail are a must. A familiarity with current reading trends is needed. Preference will be given to those with previous library experience and those who can work a flexible schedule.

Responsibilities for the Library Assistant I include checking materials in and out, creating, updating, and maintaining library user records, and collecting fines and fees. The Library Assistant I assists patrons in locating materials and using the library catalog, assists with readers’ advisory service for patrons, and completes other duties that may arise during daily library operations.

The Library Assistant I is a part-time position of 20 hours per week with weekend work required. Starting salary is $12/hr. The position is available immediately. Major medical health insurance benefits are not applicable to part-time employees, but you will be entitled to Revive Health benefits. FRL provides a limited health benefit plan to all regular and probationary employees which includes virtual medical and mental health care and discounted lab and pharmacy options.
