Library Wins Top Prizes in
Bryson City Christmas Parade

The Marianna Black Library float won two top prize trophies in the 35th Annual Bryson City Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 5. Even the freezing cold weather couldn't dampen the spirits of our Youth Services Librarian Ellen Whitehead and her "audience" on the float.

Echoing the parade theme of "Smoky Mountain Christmas", Miss Ellen was in a rocking chair in front of a decorated fireplace mantle, she animatedly told her listeners the story of The Night Before Christmas.

Walking with the float were volunteers handing out flyers about library programs and candy canes to the crowd lining the streets.

The float received First Place in the School and Civic Category and also took top honors as Best Overall Parade Winner.

Thanks to Miss Ellen and all the staff and volunteers who helped.

Learn A Foreign Language On Line

The Marianna Black Library is pleased to announce a three-month introduction of Byki® Online Library Edition, a powerful new online language-learning system designed specifically for use by the patrons of public libraries.

Byki, short for “Before You Know It,” is a rapid learning system that takes users through a series of simple steps to memorize words and phrases in a new language, including their meanings and proper pronunciation, in the shortest possible time.

Available for learning over 70 languages, library patrons are able to access the Byki Online system from inside or outside of the library, via the web browser on Windows and Mac computers. Users will have a variety of high quality learning options that build listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. In addition, Byki includes Advanced Pronunciation Analysis to help users perfect their pronunciation skills. Individual progress tracking and assessment tests help identify areas for improvement and move users in the right direction.

In addition to Byki Online’s advanced learning tools, users will have access to an array of online language and cultural resources including one click access to Facebook and Twitter language communities as well as Byki language Blogs featuring a collection of articles covering the language and the culture that surrounds it.

Creating a Patron Account: In order to set up a BYKI account you must be physically present in the library. When you ask to sign up you will be directed to the appropriate staff member who will help you set things up. You will need to create a user name and a password for your BYKI account. Once you have created an account within the library you will then be able to access Byki Online from any computer with internet access by going to the following link: http://www.library.transparent.com/fontananc/flashcards/login or by going to our homepage and clicking on the BYKI graphic.

Gingerbread Competition

The winners of the 4th Annual Gingerbread House competition were announced last week. The winning edible house, titled "The First Snow," was submitted by the Pamela and Roger Deas. Second place went to the Haiss Family: Alex Carolyn and Karl, and their house called "The Bear’s Den." The Shuler crew: Austin, Abby and Rosie, came in third place with "House of Snowmen."

The competition was open to all ages and intended to be a family project. The judges, Charles Heath, Fran Brooks and Debbie Mills, had a difficult time rating the houses, because it was apparent that so much work went into all of them.

The prizes for the competition were worth all the work. The winning Gingerbread House received gift card worth $100. Second prize was a gift package from Rita's Hallmark Store, in Bryson City, and gift package, also from Rita's, went to the third place winner.

To see all the Gingerbread Houses submitted for the competition stop by the library before January 4. You just might be inspired to compete in next year event!

FEBRUARY-Love Theme

February 9 - 3:30 pm
Sleeping Beauty (G)

Sleeping Beauty was the last and most lavish of Walt Disney's animated fairy tales. He told the artists not to hurry and to give him "a moving illustration". The film required almost four and one-half years and one million finished drawings. Instead of the 19th century storybook illustrations that had influenced the look of Snow White and Pinocchio, the artists adapted the flattened perspective and jewel-like colors of 15th century French illuminated manuscripts. The results remain unmatched for sheer visual opulence.

February 16 - A Cinderella Story (PG)
February 23 - Beauty And The Beast (G)

Katharine Hepburn stars as the spoiled and snobby socialite Tracy Lord. Applying her impossibly high ideals to everyone but herself, Tracy is about to marry a stuffy executive when her congenial ex-husband (Cary Grant), arrives to protect his former father-in-law from a potentially scandalous tabloid exposé. In an Oscar-winning role, James Stewart is the scandal reporter who falls for Tracy as her wedding day arrives, throwing her into a dizzying state of premarital jitters. Who will join Tracy at the altar?

Join The Anime Club

Giant robots, time-traveling dog demons, cyborg cops and magical girls!

The Anime Club meets at the library twice a month, on the second and fourth Saturday of each month, from 11 am - 3 pm.

As any fan knows, anime (pronounced "ah-ni-may") is animation from Japan. But these are nothing like kiddie cartoons. These shows, full of action, adventure and outrageous humor, have gained a huge following in the United States. They are popular among middle and high school students, and especially on college campuses.

Now Bryson City has an anime club of its own, and for fans, this is a chance to watch anime on a big screen, with a theater-style cound systsem. Several popular shows are featured eash sesion, including the popular gothic drama "Death Note" and "Inu Yasha," along with harder-to-find titles such as "IGPX" and "Noein." Fans are also invited to bring anime from home to show at the club. For more information, call the library at 828-488-3030.

Free Music Programs At The Library

In addition to our twice-monthly community jams, come join us for a variety of free music programs, most of which are held on the front lawn of the Library - weather permitting; otherwise they are held in the library auditorium. Snacks and refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Marianna Black Library. Video montages of most of our concerts are on youtube. December jamming always includes holiday favorites.

First & Third Thursdays, Every Month
Community Music Jam 6:00 - 7:30 pm

Jam with other amateur musicians playing old-time mountain music. Come to sing, or just come to enjoy music at the library.

Weather permitting, the jams are on the front lawn of the library. In December we always include holiday favorites in the mix. Anyone with a banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle (anything unplugged) is invited.

Larry Barnett of Grandpa's Music (Depot Street) keeps the music flowing and the fun going. Normally, Barnett calls out a tune and its signature, and the group plays it together; but there's also a chance for anyone to share with the group a song they would like to perform. The community jams offer a chance for musicians of all ages and levels of ability to share music they have learned over the years or learn the old-time mountain songs.

This program receives support from the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency funded by the State of North Carolina and the National Endowment of the Arts, which believes a great nation deserves great art.

Bob Berlin

Woodturning

Artist statement - "I was born in a suburb of Detroit, MI where I earned an education degree from Michigan State University, a Masters degree from Oakland University and taught elementary school for 27 years. During that time I dabbled in various art forms and taking classes on photography, jewelry making and watercolors. When I retired to Bryson City, a friend introduced me to wood turning and I finally found something that I love to do. Making an object from a block of wood is truly satisfying. Each piece evolves into its own unique design as I turn. I feel fortunate to live in an area that is filled with wonderful artist, craft makers and craft schools."

Upcoming
March - Allen Hughes, photography
April - Women's Club display
May - Gail Findlay, cat collection
June - Honeybees and beekeeping
July - Erin Dehart, painting
