Bellevue Farm

Badger, Curtis J
Genre:
Bellevue Farm, part of The Nature Conservancy's Virginia Coast Reserve, a fort-five thousand-acre sanctuary on the Eastern Shore, was once the home of a pre-Revolutionary War plantation. Before that, Native Americans hunted its forests and salt marshes. Today it is still a working form, but it also is a coastal wildlife sanctuary, a place where the sea, the salt marsh, and the high land come together. Curtis Badger has spent several years exploring Bellevue Farm, studying the birds in the forest and thicket, searching for artifacts in the plowed fields, and contemplating how his own life meshes with the lives of those who inhabited the land long ago. Bellevue Farm is a collection of natural history essays, but it also is a look inward, an example of how time spent along, with nature, can be both thrapeutic and enlightening.
