Young Emmett Farmer is working in the fields when a letter summons him to begin an apprenticeship as a bookbinder-—a vocation that arouses fear, superstition, and prejudice in their small community. Emmett has always been drawn to books, even though they are forbidden. Bookbinding is a sacred calling, Seredith informs her new apprentice, and under her watchful eye he learns to craft elegant leather-bound volumes in which they will capture something unique: memories. But while Seredith is an artisan, others of their kind use these talents for dark ends. Then Emmett discovers that one of the books has his name on it.
