Dawes, Texas, is on fire. Many nights, Rosemary and her husband, Paul, go outside to see another house in their town up in flames. They're told the fires are holy--the charismatic young pastor of their church, Papa Jake, insists on this--but Rosemary's not sure. Two years beforehand, in a last-ditch attempt to restore her crumbling marriage, Rosemary agreed to move to this isolated central Texas town with Paul and join the Church of Dawes. But now she's bristling at the puritanical rules of this Christian sect and hasn't yet become pregnant--both strikes against her. She only finds purpose when she's called upon to help Julie, a new mother in the community who is, like Rosemary, feeling isolated and lost. As the fires spread and the church faces challenges from enemies on the outside and within, and Julie is betrayed in a terrible way, Rosemary begins to question the reality of her life and wonders if trouble will always find her--or if she'll ever be able to outrun it.
