In the year 2024, the United States teeters on the edge of madness. The country is marred by unattended environmental disasters, economic crises, and social chaos. Fifteen-year-old Olamina, a preacher's daughter living in Los Angeles, is protected from danger by the walls of her gated community. However, her world is ruled by fear, and she is afflicted with hyperempathy - she feels the physical pain of those around her as if it were her own.
