Jonathan Collins loses a leg in the Civil War, but he adjusts quickly. After carving his own wooden leg, he turns to making coffins and then undertaking. He plies his new trade in violent towns--where he is in high demand--and even meets Wild Bill Hickock in one of them. No place for a lonely man, Jon, now nicknamed "Pinebox," decides to relocate to Utah, where he meets a nice girl and learns real carpentry. When his dreams for the future are dashed, he begins a long-running series of meetings with Hickok, forging a special bond the lawman.
