When gold is discovered in the foothills just outside of the town of Appaloosa a slew of new problems develop for Marshals Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch--two shrewd mining factions and their hired guns square off over the claim. Then a powerful snowstorm blankets the town and their problems multiply with the emergence of anonymous letters to the editor of the local paper leading the duo to a series of murders and the pursuit of a vicious serial killer.
