When Dismas Hardy's secretary, Phyllis, displays out-of-character behavior, Hardy is concerned - especially when he learns that her convict brother has been released from prison. Then Phyllis is arrested as an accessory to the murder of Hector Valdez, a coyote who'd been smuggling Central American women into the country. Valdez was shot to death - on a day that Phyllis disappeared from work.
