The making of "Show ways," or quilts which once served as secret maps for freedom-seeking slaves, is a tradition passed from mother to daughter in the author's family. A quilt made by Susan Skuda and Rosalie Nieznalski of the Smoky Mountain Quilters Guild, Franklin, NC, illustrating the symbols shown in the book, is part of the kit.
