Join the Cashiers Historical Society and the Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library on Wednesday, Februrary 26 at 3:00 p.m. in the library meeting room for an engaing discussion with Chris Aluka Berry about his new visual history book, Affrilachia: Testimonies.
Affrilachia: Testimonies is the first photography book dedicated to honoring the Black communities of the southern Appalachian mountains. Berrry immersed himself in the lives and stories of Black Appalachians, showcasing both the diversity and shared experiences of these proud communitites. His intimate and revealing photographs portray African Americans in various personal settings alongside historical images from archives and family collections. These powerful visuals are interwoven with narratives and poetry by Kelly Elaine Navies, an oral historian and museum professional, as well as a contextual history provided by Dr. Maia Surdam.
