Let’s Get Japaneseee: Iaido Demonstration

The Jackson County Public Library will host the next Let’s Get Japaneseee program on Tuesday, April 1st at 6 p.m.  This program will be in the Community Room of the library and will feature a demonstration on the Japanese art of Iaido. Iaido is one of several Japanese sword arts and it has a history extending back about 450 years.  Some systems of kenjutsu (another Japanese sword art) were using iai-like techniques as many as 600 years ago but as a separate and distinct art iai dates back to the latter part of the 16th century.  The art centers around the concept of drawing the sword and simultaneously reacting to an enemy with the draw being part of the initial technique.

Participants will learn about the history and development of Iaido, and about the swords used in the artform, from Gregory Huff whose current rank of 8th dan Hanshi was awarded to him by the system’s 22nd headmaster, Ikeda Takashi.  Folks will also learn about what waza is and have an opportunity to walk through different waza techniques.

April and Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) are deeply connected to Japanese socio-cultural aspects, including Bushido—the Way of the Samurai.
