THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN CANCELLED: Film Screening: The Deciders
THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN CANCELLED. The Jackson County Public Library will host a free film screening on Tuesday, October 15th at 6 p.m. The film, The Deciders, is a documentary about a group of self-professed 'Patriotic Millionaires' descend on a tiny, Southern town called Whiteville with an unusual goal: to convince its conservative and liberal working-class residents to set aside their partisan differences and help jump start a national movement to tax the rich, raise the minimum wage, and save American democracy.
The resulting 'Great Economy Project' offers skeptical residents free dinners, childcare and a first-hand education on how economic hardships, brought on by both political parties, are driving political extremism and subsidizing obscene levels of wealth. An unlikely mix of residents begin organizing and demanding political accountability from their leaders in North Carolina, where the minimum wage remains $7.25/hr; far less than a living wage and a fate shared with more than 40% of their fellow Americans.
In this refreshing documentary for 2024, single mothers, military veterans and Trump supporters all start to see one another and their own power more clearly in solidarity; but can this unorthodox approach to igniting change make headway amid overheated culture wars, small town gossip and a democratic system skewed in favor of the wealthy elite?
