Ronald C. Evans presents Brinkley: Goat Glands, Radio, and Country Music
Local author Ronald C. Evans will present his new book, Brinkley: Goat Glands, Radio, and Country Music at the Jackson County Public Library Community Room on Friday, July 12th at 6:00pm.
This book is based on the dramatic rise and fall of Dr. John R. Brinkley, who was born in the Beta settlement near Sylva, North Carolina. He rose from the humblest beginning to become one of the most notable 'charlatans' of the 20th century, bilking millions from aging men who believed he could restore their sexual virility through goat gland surgery or bogus prostate concoctions. In the process, he unintentionally pioneered the idea of organ transplants, the use of private airplanes for political campaigns, and advanced the science of radio broadcasting, which led to the popularization of country music.
Ronald Evans is a descendant of the Peek family of Macon County, NC and has also written Panther Bill Peek, Odyssey of Robert Peake, and two books of local true-crime: Frankie: A Life Cut Short and Swift Justice: Murder on Scott’s Creek. To reserve any of his books, please call City Lights Bookstore at 828-586-9499.
