Susan Pepper & Sarah Songbird Burkey - Summer Music Series

As part of a Summer Music Series, the Marianna Black Library presents an evening of traditional Apalachian music from Susan Pepper and Sarah Songbird Burkey on Thursday, June 27th, at 7:00 PM.

Susan Pepper is an authentic tradition-bearer, a cultural broker bridging the gap between generations of musicians past and present. According to Pepper, she sings, 'as a way to remember and honor past generations and to draw on the strength of their songs and stories as we travel forward.'

Sarah Elizabeth Burkey's family has called Appalachia home for over 300 years. To Sarah Elizabeth, singing comes a‣ naturally as breathing, earning her the name 'Songbird' two decades ago when she began singing the old ballads in public.

Together, Songbird Burkey and Susan Pepper present traditional mountain ballads and folk songs as well as sprinkle in traditional-inspired original compositions. They have shared the stage at the monthly Ballad Night in Marshall, NC as well as at the ballad swap at Mountain Heritage Day and the Mountain Heritage Center's Concert Series at Western Carolina University This pair delight in sharing a song and storytelling tradition with deep roots and meaning in this region.
