This second volume of the Civil War is dominated by the almost continual confrontation of great armies, including the bloodbath at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Grant's seven relentless efforts against Vicksburg,and the three-day conflict at Gettysburg. All the great battles are in this work, but so are the smaller ones, such as Ball's Bluff, Fort Donelson, Pea Ridge, Island Ten, New Orleans, and the Monitor versus the Merrimac. The story is told entirely from the point of view of the people involved in it.
