NAACP: The Story of Us

Join us at the Jackson County Public Library as the NAACP presents The Story of Us: Cooking and Storytelling- Gullah / Geechee style.  This program will be in the Community Room on Saturday, November 15th at 1pm. Folks will learn about one person's family history and ties to the Geechee community by cooking food and storytelling. The Gullah/Geechee people of today are descendants of enslaved Africans from several tribal groups of west and central Africa forced to work on the plantations of coastal North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Many waterways parting the land made travel to the mainland difficult and rare. This separation forced people to blend tribal languages with English and maintain arts, crafts, religious beliefs, folklore, rituals, and food preferences connected to their African roots.
*Registration is required* To register please click here or call the library at 828-586-2106. The Jackson County Public Library is a member of the Fontana Regional Library.
