The Oregon Trail is the artery that brought lifeblood to the west. It was a grueling challenge for thousands who wanted land and opportunity: two thousand miles of rutted trail with no water or far too much, wicked weather, wild animals and even wilder people. Among those making the trip is young Jake Zane, who became the man of the family too soon after sickness took his father. But Jake is determined, with the help of an escaped slave named Sampson, to protect his mother and sisters as they make the treacherous journey westward--or die trying.
