A Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope carefully sets off for her home in the hills as a blizzard sets in. When she encounters a car that has skidded off the road, she stops to assist. Though the door is open, there is no driver in sight--only a young toddler strapped in the back seat. Vera takes the child and drives on until she reaches Brockburn, the house in Northumberland where her father grew up. Inside, a party is in full swing, with music and laughter to herald the coming Christmas. But outside, a young woman lies dead in the snow. When the blizzard worsens, trapping the revelers inside, Vera decides to investigate the woman's death--uncovering some of her own family's complicated past in the process.
