Mushrooms Abound: Fungi Diversity in Western North Carolina

Western North Carolina is arguably one of the best places in North America to find the greatest diversity of mushrooms.  There is a wide array of edible mushrooms in our woods. But we also have others that are bizarre and delightful to find in their own right.  For example, there is bird's nest fungi that looks like a bird's nest complete with eggs (and is often found in-town, on mulch).  We also have a mushroom that looks very similar to a head of cauliflower.  And there are corals, cups, parchments, jellies, and more! Join us on Saturday, October 12th at 11 AM at the Jackson County Public Library Community Room as Heather Brooks educates us on some of the most interesting mushrooms in our area.

Heather Brooks is an Asheville based nature artist. Through her artwork and active participation in the North American Mycological Association, Heather has developed an expertise in mushroom foraging. Heather currently leads walks for area nonprofits. She also shares her knowledge and enjoyment of this pastime with her followers on Facebook and Instagram @smallwoodlandthings.
