The Friends provide financial support to buy books and other materials for the
library’s collection, purchase needed items of equipment of furniture and help sponsor
library programs. The Friends promote and advocate for the Library by raising
awareness of library resources and provide refreshments for weekly summer music
programs, classic movie series and other events.

The Used Book Store, located at 32 Everett Street right down the street from the
Library, is the Friends' primary fundraiser and is staffed 100% by volunteers. Bookstore
shelves are stocked with used books on a wide range of topics, best sellers, books by
North Carolina authors, oldies and autographed books, children’s books, puzzles, videos,
DVDs and magazines. All items have been donated. Donated materials and volunteers
are always needed.

The Bookstore shares space with a talented local artists, whose photography,
paintings and prints are for sale in the Bookstore.

Our success depends on an active membership and dedicated volunteers. Join
the Friends and be a part of helping make our great Library even better!

Dear Friend,

Flowers and trees are budding and our lives, too, are slowly unfolding after a cold winter and a year of pandemic closures and fears. We hope you are feeling as optimistic as we are this spring.

Several dedicated and fearless Friends of the Marianna Black Library bookstore volunteers have been hard at work trying to stay open throughout most of this past year. Wearing masks, applying hand sanitizer and limiting the number of customers, these three volunteers braved the public to help keep the doors open and the donations coming. Sales, of course, have been down significantly over the last year due to fewer shoppers and limited hours. The bookstore had to close for a few months and then not all our volunteers felt comfortable coming back while still vulnerable to the virus, causing a significant loss of revenue compared to last year.

The bookstore hours had been mostly consistent since last summer – noon to 4 PM Thursday through Saturday – and have allowed locals and visitors to find good reads, music and some videos. We plan to extend those hours as more volunteers have offered their time to keep the bookstore open Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 5 PM. We are ever so grateful to the new and seasoned volunteers. And we could never have kept the doors open without the hard work of store manager Ary’dell Hotelling. Unfortunately for all of us, Aryd’ell Is moving to be closer to her children. This will leave a great gap in our board, at the bookstore and in Bryson City. We are hoping to find a book/library lover to help manage the bookstore as a dedicated volunteer. If you know anyone that fits that description, please have them contact Aryd’ell at 828-371-0506.

Last year we renewed everyone’s membership fee-free because we were all hurting from the effects of the pandemic. Many of you, however, sent in donations anyway. THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts! Your donations help us support the Marianna Black Library – so every little bit helped (helps)!

It is time again to renew for this year. Your continued support will help our Marianna Black Library offer the great selection of materials you are used to. We also intend to help sponsor the children’s Summer Reading Program and help with any expenses not currently budgeted for. As we all know, life can be unpredictable!

Please send membership checks made out to FOMBL to P.O. Box 27. If you would, please also include your email address with your membership renewal. We hope to send our future letters through email.

Thank you from the Friends Board,

Aryd’ell Hoetelling – President
Vacant - Vice President
Elise Delfield – Secretary
Terry Cotton – Treasurer
Elise Delfield – Fundraising Chair
