Spice Club Ras-El Hanout

Join us at the Jackson County Public Library for our next Spice Club meeting on Tuesday, January 28th at 6 p.m. The January Spice Club will meet in the Community Room of the Library.  This month’s spice is Ras El Hanout, a complex, aromatic spice blend famously associated with Moroccan cuisine. If you're lucky enough to go to this beautiful country, ras el hanout should be on your list of foods to bring back from Morocco. The literal translation of ras el hanout from Arabic to English is 'head of the shop,' but in reality, it means 'top shelf,' both terms implying that this is the best offering in a spice shop. Due to its liberal use in mrouzia, a lamb and honey dish with intense seasoning, ras el hanout is also sometimes called mrouzia spice. Some versions are spicy, and some have no heat at all. If you make your own blend, you can control the heat.
Spice Appreciation Club is a monthly program that gives participants the opportunity to cook with an extraordinary flavor. It's like a book club, but instead of reading we're cooking. Many participants bring food made with the spice to share but it is not a requirement. Participants can pick up a spice kit at the Reference Desk. *Registration Required* To register and a reserve a spice kit, please call the library at (828) 586-2016 or email JCPL-Adults@fontanalib.org.

Sylva Naturalist Club: The Forest Unseen

Over the course of the year, participants will read The Forest Unseen, find and make visits to your own special forest plot – this could be a favorite spot in a nearby park or wild area, your own backyard, or even your garden or deck - journal your findings in any way that inspires you: drawings, photos, written notes, poetry, etc. Together, we’ll share our observations with fellow club members and enjoy natural history tidbits and nature connection exercises you can try at home. We’ll also contribute valuable scientific observations to the National Phenology Network.

Our plan is to read the book along with the seasons rather than all at once. It's fine for people to come even if they haven't had a chance to get the book and do the reading yet.

To sign up please contact Amy Duggins at aduggins@bmtrust.org. Amy is Community Science Coordinator with Balsam Mountain Trust, and has spent time as a naturalist, field biologist, park ranger, and nature connection mentor.
