We know that sometimes it’s hard to remember to return those library books and DVDs, and then the fines start mounting up. So, to give our friends and neighbors a chance to come back to the library, and to give our books a chance to come home, the Fontana Regional Library system is having a “Love Your Library” Amnesty Week, February 9 – 14, 2015.
February is a month where hearts are everywhere, with schools, child care centers, and families talking about kindness, caring, and love.
While preparing a preschooler for school or child care, many families think about alphabet knowledge, as well as independent personal skills, like the ability to put on shoes. However, teachers and child caregivers indicate that valuable social skills, including the ability to get along with others and the ability to express and control feelings in socially appropriate ways, are just as important.

Franklin, NC-- February 5th 2015 will see the first ever Harry Potter Book Night celebrated throughout the world and the Macon County Public Library is getting ready for their own special evening of wizard activities. The fun kicks off at 6:30 PM.

Holiday celebrations usually involve some traditional foods. Preschoolers like being part of the festivities, including helping make holiday foods. When children participate in cooking activities they gain math, science, and language skills. They can count teaspoons of baking powder. When they watch a stick of butter melting, they are learning the science of solids changing to liquids.

Preschoolers, children ages 3-5 years, are very curious. They ask questions and want to share what they know. Books can help them to explore the world, things in and far from what they encounter each day. We'll share tips and information about how and why reading is so important to preschoolers.
If you'd like more hands-on assistance, join us at Macon County Public Library on Saturday, November 15 from 10am-12pm for a Beary Fun Activity Day, sponsored by Read2me. We'll share ideas and techniques for working with your child on literacy building skills as well as fun activities, story time, and refreshments.
Our first Little Library was installed October 22, 2014 on Main Street in Franklin in front of town hall and we're grateful to everyone who came out to help us launch it.
