Jackson County Public Library Children's Area gives kids their own space in the library, filled with books,  DVDs, a train table, puppet theater, puzzles, and many other things. There is one study room that can be reserved or used when available, as well as computers just for kids and AWES with pre-programmed games on them. We have a special Storytime Room where we hold our Storytimes and many of our programs. Youth Services staff are always on hand to lend assistance.

The Rocks Under Our Feet: Tectonic History and Formation of the WNC Mountains

The Rocks Under Our Feet: Tectonic History and Formation of the WNC Mountains

Jackson County Public Library

The Jackson County Public Library and Balsam Mountain Trust will host a series of nature talks beginning on Thursday, January 29th at 6pm. The first talk in the series will be The Rocks Under Our Feet: Tectonic History and Formation of the WNC Mountains presented by Dr. Cheryl Waters-Tormey. You walk all over them all day, but have you ever taken a closer look? Geology is all around you, and there is a lot to learn! Join Dr. Cheryl Waters-Tormey in the Community Room of the library to dive deeper under the soil and learn about your local geology in the Southern Appalachians.
Dr. Waters-Tormey has over 20 years’ experience teaching and researching geology of the Southern Appalachians as a professor at Western Carolina University. Her main interests are in how rocks formed deep in tectonics plates develop fracture systems as they are brought to the surface by tectonic events. She earned her PhD and MS in Structural Geology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, respectively. She works with local organizations, such as The Pisgah Conservancy and the Carolina Geological Society.
This program is free and open to the public. For more information please call the library at 828-586-9499. The Jackson County Public Library is a member of the Fontana Regional Library.
