Jackson County Public Library Children's Area gives kids their own space in the library, filled with books,  DVDs, a train table, puppet theater, puzzles, and many other things. There is one study room that can be reserved or used when available, as well as computers just for kids and AWES with pre-programmed games on them. We have a special Storytime Room where we hold our Storytimes and many of our programs. Youth Services staff are always on hand to lend assistance.

Susan Pepper: Traditional Song from Appalachia

Susan Pepper: Traditional Song from Appalachia

Jackson County Public Library

The Jackson County Public Library will host a free concert on Tuesday, December 10th at 6 p.m. Ballad singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Susan Pepper will perform songs from her new album, Where the Islands Overflow: Traditional Song from Appalachia.
Oxford American calls her 'a seasoned singer' with a 'celestial upper range.'  She is featured in the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area’s Traditional Artist Directory.  She teaches for Junior Appalachian Musicians and has worked in a number of capacities for that program. She has released three albums, including a collection of field recordings of mountain ballad singers, and this coming November, she will release a new album of traditional ballads from Appalachia. Her historical short play, A Singer Needs a Song based on the story of ballad singer and Jackson County, NC native, Ethel Brown, was produced by Calliope Stage and performed at the Mountain Heritage Festival at Western CarolinaUniversity. She also co-produced and sang in the feature length film The Mountain Minor. Pepper cherishes the opportunity to teach and pass on these songs to singers of all ages, abilities and experience levels. Her favorite place to sing is while walking in the woods. Susan earned a Master of Arts degree in Appalachian Studies and she and her family call Jackson County, NC home.
This concert will be in the Community Room of the library and is free and open to the public. The Jackson County Public Library is a member of the Fontana Regional Library. For more information, please call the library at 828-586-2016.
