Jackson County Public Library Children's Area gives kids their own space in the library, filled with books,  DVDs, a train table, puppet theater, puzzles, and many other things. There is one study room that can be reserved or used when available, as well as computers just for kids and AWES with pre-programmed games on them. We have a special Storytime Room where we hold our Storytimes and many of our programs. Youth Services staff are always on hand to lend assistance.

Creek Life in the Southern Appalachian Mountains

Creek Life in the Southern Appalachian Mountains

Jackson County Public Library

The Jackson County Public Library and Balsam Mountain Trust have partnered for a series of nature talks about the Southern Appalachian Mountains. The March program will feature Creek Life of the Southern Appalachians with Dr. Michael Wall.  From 'architect' caddisflies that build their own stone houses to fierce underwater predators, these little creatures are the unsung heroes of the forest. This talk will explore how aquatic insects are the link between fallen autumnal leaves and the brook trout that drive a $1.38 billion industry in Western North Carolina. Come discover why the smallest residents of the creek make the biggest splash in our aquatic food webs.

Michael was raised as a naturalist in the southeast, sloshing in many creeks and wetlands learning their unique flora and fauna. Part botanist, mostly entomologist, Michael serves as Executive Director of the Balsam Mountain Trust and is passionate about science communication and cultivating biophilia.

This program is free and open to the public. The Jackson County Public Library is a member of the Fontana Regional Library. For more information please call the library at 828-586-9499.
