Sylva-- On Thursday, April 27 at 6 PM in the Community Room, the Jackson County Public Library is hosting The Center for Domestic Peace and the WCU Peacekeepers for a program about supporting survivors. Come learn what to say when a friend or family member opens up about abuse or sexual assault. Attendees will learn the importance of trauma-informed responses, reasons why people stay in abusive relationships, and how to encourage them to take steps toward safety.

Phases of the Moon with Randi Neff - Wednesday, April 26 at 4 PM in the Storytime Room of the Jackson County Public Library.

Sylva-- The Jackson County Public Library is hosting Randi Neff from the Smokey Mountain STEM Collaborative on Wednesday, April 26 at 4 PM in the Storytime Room. Attendees will be learning about the phases of the moon and also be making an Oreo Moon Phase Calendar, so make sure to bring your appetite! This program is free and open to the public.

Sylva-- On Wednesday, April 19 at 11 AM, the Jackson County Public Library is hosting Jenna Kranz from Uncomplicated Kitchen for a cooking class. Participants will use our new Charlie Cart, a teaching kitchen on wheels, to cook a meal that costs under $10 to make. This month we’ll make Massaged Kale Salad with feta, spring veggies, and fresh herb vinaigrette.

Sylva--  The Jackson County Public Library is hosting the monthly Book Discussion Group on Tuesday, April 18 at 10 AM in the Conference Room. The book to be discussed is An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon. In Rivers Solomon's highly imaginative sci-fi novel An Unkindness of Ghosts, eccentric Aster was born into slavery on—and is trying to escape from—a brutally segregated spaceship that for generations has been trying to escort the last humans from a dying planet to a Promised Land.

Sylva-- On Saturday, April 15th at 2 PM, the Jackson County Public Library is hosting Jacque Laura of Snake Song Shop. Jacque will give tips on repotting, watering, and general care that help common indoor plants thrive. Whether you're a newer pandemic-era plant parent or have been nurturing houseplants for a long time, there's always more to know about taking care of your plants. Snake Song will also have a pop-up plant shop in the Atrium.

The Marianna Black Library in Bryson City, in partnership with the Japan Outreach Initiative Coordinator at WCU, will be hosting an event about “Japanese Food Culture.” Monday, April 17 from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM in the auditorium. Nanaka Okamura, a Japan Outreach Initiative (JOI) Coordinator will lead this event.

In this 60-minute workshop, you will learn about “Japanese Food Culture,” including traditional Japanese cuisine (Washoku), school meals, common household meals, bento boxes, etiquette, and more.

Sylva -- On the four Tuesdays in April from 6-7 PM, the Jackson County Public Library is presenting a four-part series of lectures/discussions on Modern Political Philosophy led by retired Clemson professor Todd May. This series will be in the Community Room, is free, and requires no registration.
